Bates Regroups After Graduation of Key Stars

Men's 03-04 Season Outlook:
The 14th ranked Bobcats earned their first-ever CBB (Colby-Bates-Bowdoin) squash title last year, and the team also earned the national team sportsmanship award while posting a 12-9 record.

Last year’s graduating seniors Eric Lopez and Matt Wu will be greatly missed, but Bates returns many of their top players for 2003-2004 including 4-time #1 Ben Schippers ’04, #3 Jamie White ’06, #4 Chad Mountain ’04, #5 Rob Weller, as well as the return of starters Guillermo Moronta ’06, Peter Goldsborough ’06, Bill Vayakornvichit ’06 and last year’s team MVP Alex Wolff ’05. Wolff is a standout on the Bates men’s soccer team. Additional varsity returners are Andy Roberts ’04, Ta Bhicharnchitr ’05, Noah Davis ’05, Will Richards ’06, and Dmitri Russell ’06.

Co-captains for Bates this year are seniors Ben Schippers and Chad Mountain. A highlight for the team this year will be a seven-day men’s and women’s team trip to Kingston, Jamaica, Jan. 2-9th, as training to prepare for the second semester dual match schedule. Bates played many close 5-4 matches last year, and the team expects continued close contests this year against rivals Bowdoin, Franklin & Marshal, Hobart, Dennison, Navy, Amherst, Williams and Colby. The men’s CBB squash title will be hotly contested this year.

Incoming first-year players for Bates this year are Gary Kan ’07 from Hong Kong, and Chris Foster ’07 from Scarsdale, New York. Kan played #2 for Taft School last year and won the #2 flight at interscholastics. He is a strong player who will challenge Schippers and White as the three vie for the top three positions on the team. Bates plays 21 matches this year and hopes to have a strong season.
