Bates Women Eye Top of Kurtz Division

Women's 03-04 Season Outlook:
The 10th-ranked Bobcats return the heart of their line-up for the upcoming 2003-2004 year, including returning their top six players, as well gaining back senior captain and former #2 player Kristen Brush ’04 who missed all of last season. Returning top-nine players from last year’s team are Melissa Lue Yen ’06, Sarah Persing ’05, Eliza Roberts ’06, Jenny Loring ’05, Maggie Smith ’05, Liz Wagoner ’05 and Audrey Blanchette ’06. Also returning is Kate Sadler ’05 who played just outside the starting line-up last season.

Having reached the finals of the Kurtz Cup (B-flight) at Howe Cup for the past two years, and having amassed a 9-8 record last year, the Bobcats will play a challenging schedule in 2003-2004 including dual matches against Trinity, Yale and Dartmouth. Key rivalries for Bates this year will be matches against Bowdoin, Colby, Amherst, Williams, Mt. Holyoke, St. Lawrence and Cornell.

Bates will send five players to Princeton for the Constable and skill-level tournaments late in January, and a highlight for the team this year will be a seven-day men’s and women’s team trip to Jamaica Jan. 2-9th, to prepare for the second semester dual match schedule.

RECRUITS
Bates adds four first-year players to their line-up in 2003-2004, with the addition of Schuyler Haynes ’07 from Bacova, Virginia; Kelsey Engman ’07 from Haverford, Pennsylvania; Ashley Edwards ’07 from Chicago, Illinois; and Nicky Eisa ’07 from New Haven, Connecticut. Haynes played at Phillips Exeter, Engman played for Shipley School, Edwards played at Loomis Chaffee, and Eisa played at Choate Rosemary Hall. Lue Yen ’06, from Kingston, Jamaica, is Bates’ returning #1 player. She worked hard on her game this past summer and is aiming to have a strong season. Bates’ four first-year players will all try to earn a starting spot on the team
