UC Berkeley Bolstered by Swedish Freshman

Men's 03-04 Season Outlook:
The future looks bright for the Golden Bears of UC Berkeley after a very successful recruiting season. Most notably, the Bears begin their 2003-2004 campaign with the addition of former Swedish U19 champion, Håkan Borgström. Borgström brings international experience to a quickly maturing program. Also added to this year’s mix is Deerfield Academy standout, Robert Gibbons, a native of San Francisco, who finally returns home to compete for a top five spot in the Bears’ lineup.
The Golden Bears lost only three players from last years’ team. Occupying the numbers four through six spots, “Sunny” Asfandyar Khan, Christian Munkvold, and Ben Durie, will be missed. However, returning is last years’ number one, Jehan Engineer, who posted a 9-3 record as a freshman. Captain Harlan Yu also returns at the number three spot after posting a 6-6 record in his junior campaign. Yu spent his summer enduring weekly runs in the hilly Berkeley terrain and competing in Seattle and Salt Lake City. Rounding out the top five is Manu Vaish at number four, who boasted an undefeated record at last year’s nationals. After captaining last year’s team, Vaish is certain to provide big results for the Bears, as he has for the past three seasons. This top five lineup is sure to provide some compelling results and make a big push towards the top twenty echelon of the intercollegiate squash ladder.
At numbers six through eight, the bears return three more players, Adam Angsten, Bhuvan Jain, and Laurie Choi, respectively. Also battling for starting positions are an exciting, and large, group of new players, freshmen and sophomores alike. Lysander Jim, Casey Harelson, Nikolai Schnittke, Nathaniel Rice, Adam Jacob, and Zach Brown, an extremely athletic and talented group of beginners are destined to impact future matches for the Bears, and will definitely be prominent players for Cal as they progress through the upcoming months. Cal opens their season November 2 against number 20 ranked Stanford. Watch for an upset and GO BEARS!!!
