Saint Lawrence Men Eye UCAA League

2003-04 Squash Program Outlook
by Wally Johnson, SID St. Lawrence University

St. Lawrence University enters its fifth year as an intercollegiate men’s team with an eye on moving up in the national rankings and capturing its first league championship.

The Saints will host the first-ever Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association championship in the Robie Squash Center in November and will further showcase their new facility as the host of the National Singles Championships to end the 2003-2004 season.

The Saints will be joined by Hamilton, Hobart, Rochester and Vassar in the first men’s UCAA championship tournament and will take a veteran team into the tournament.

A trio of sophomores will lead the Saints in 2003-2004 as Keith Merrill, New York, NY and the Hotchkiss School went 10-7 at the top of the Saint lineup last season, Spencer Groff, Radnor PA and the Hill School, was also 10-7 playing primarily three and four and Mike Whalley, Shelburne, VT and Holderness went 6-6 and will look to move up the Saint lineup as a sophomore. The Saints also return senior captain Whip Farnum, Narbeth, PA,
who was 7-7 at three and four last season.

Coach Vijay Chitnis will also welcome James McAvity, Greenwich, CT, a standout in squash, tennis and soccer to the Saint program as a first year player.
