Saint Lawrence Women Eye Top Ten

2003-04 Squash Program Outlook
by Wally Johnson, SID St. Lawrence University

St. Lawrence University’s women’s squash team enters its fifth year as a varsity program with an eye on cracking the top ten nationally.

The Saints, who will host the 2004 National Singles Championships at the new Robie Squash Center, return a quartet of proven veterans and will add at least two promising newcomers.
Lara Kimble (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe) has compiled a 21-5 record at the top of the Saint lineup in a season and a half and was 10-5 last season as the Saints’ number one, advancing to the quarterfinals in Holleran Cup competition as the eighth seed.

Joining Kimble at the top of the Saint lineup will be senior Gigi Tuten, who has a 43-4 record in three seasons, tying 2003 graduate Sarah Kreiner for the most wins and best record in
program history. Tuten, Villanova, PA went 12-3 last season going 6-1 at number three and 6-2 at number two. Two of her three losses came against players from Cornell and Dartmouth. Sophomores Jane Affleck, Wyndmoor, PA and Lauren Burd, Baltimore, MD are
coming off solid rookie performances and will look to move up in the Saint lineup. Affleck was 8-7 as a first year player and played from three to six in the lineup. Burd went 8-4 at six and seven, missing several matches due to illness.

Saint coach Vijay Chitnis, who has dramatically increased the popularity of the sport on the St. Lawrence campus both on a student and faculty and staff level, expects first year players Katia Stipinovich, Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, and Ashley Eldredge, Wayne, PA to be immediate contributors among a number of new candidates for the team. Eldredge was a three year captain and MVP in squash at the Berkshire School while Stipinovich was a three year all league player for St. Paul’s School.

In addition to hosting the singles championships, St. Lawrence will also host the first-ever Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association championship as Hamilton, Vassar and William Smith will join the Saints in quest of the league’s first championship.
