Smith College Looks Forward to New Depth

2003-04 Squash Program Outlook
by SquashTalk Staff

The women of Smith Squash have ample reason to be excited coming into the 2003-2004 season. In addition to five new ASB courts, and a new fitness center, the Smith Squad will also encounter something new this year…depth.

Although the team will still lack a range of pre-college playing experience, they will have a record number of eleven returning players providing much hope for the upcoming season. This year the team is lead by Junior Ashley Kilgore who showed a wonderful display of talent at last year’s Individual Championships. Ashley, who is in her third year of playing squash, was awarded Honorable Mention. Ashley will be backed up by Jean Lee and Krittika Jarupanich who have returned from Junior Year Abroad. Rounding out the team will be a plethora of talent that will be molded by Coach Tim Bacon. Bacon will be assisted this year by last year’s #2 player, Stacy Metzger who has been accepted into Smith College’s two-year graduate program in coaching (the nation’s top rated program). As part of her practicum, Stacy will act as assistant coach for the team, in addition to playing near the top of the team ladder.

As usual, the team’s strength will be its rapid improvement over the course of the season. Last year, the Pioneers came back from an 8-1 loss to Stanford early in the season to an 8-1 victory over Stanford at Howe Cup. Other such improvements were demonstrated against teams such as Franklin and Marshall and Haverford. The improvement was not quite enough as the Pioneers ended their season in nail-biting loss in the final game of the 5-4 Franklin and Marshall match at Howe Cup.

The Smith squad is heading into the 2003-2004 season with great optimism. The Pioneers expect a strong recovery from last season’s ‘building’ year and aim to finish near the top of Division C at Howe Cup.
