Stanford Hopes to Keep Rising

2003-04 Squash Program Outlook
by Rich Sherwood, Captain

For the past four years, since the Stanford Men's Squash team began competing at Nationals, Stanford has ended the year ranked better than in the previous year.

This year promises to be no exception, as Stanford is returning all of its top eleven players from last year’s team, which finished ranked #20 in the nation. Considering that six of these eleven had never played squash before arriving at Stanford and that the returning members worked hard on their games during the summer, this extra year of experience should lead to vast improvements across the team.

Additionally, Stanford’s team is led by five seniors and one first-year graduate student, so the team is jam packed with maturity.

Stanford’s season opens with a rivalry match against Cal-Berkeley, whom Stanford defeated twice last season. Then, they travel to Navy in November to test how their improved team stacks up with east coast competition. Stanford will host Wesleyan and the Yale women’s team, as well as University of Utah, in early January before traveling to Yale for its annual participation in the Yale round-robin. A second showdown with Cal-Berkeley will prepare Stanford for its run at the division C championship at Nationals in February.

Regarding players, Stanford’s main intrigue will occur at the #2 position. Last year’s #2, senior Sam Gellman, will spend the first quarter in Chile, so for the first half of the season, last year’s #3, senior Paul Valiant, will compete for the spot with upstart third-year player and first-year graduate student Tim Holme and sophomore Aaron Ligon, who was sidelined for Nationals last year due to a shoulder injury. Senior Rich Sherwood, who finished last year ranked #51 in the nation, will play #1 for the third year in a row. Also playing integral roles on the team are seniors Sagar Chandaria and Justin Durack, juniors Mike Asmar and Chris Fesenmaier, and sophomores Jonathan Levine and Joe Kirscher. The team will again be coached by Richard Elliott, #2 in the nation in the over-35s division
