2003-04 Squash Program
Outlook
by David Kingsley, SID Trinity College
This coming season,
the Lady Bantams will welcome back eight starters from last
year’s National Championship Team, which completed one of the best
seasons any team has enjoyed in intercollegiate squash.
The team captured
the dual match (third in a row) and the National Championships
(second in a row), while posting 9-0 wins in all three of its Howe Cup
Matches for the first time in the Tournament’s history.
This season, the
team, led by senior co-captains and three-time All-Americans Amina Helal
and Pam Saunders will strive to repeat the unprecedented success of the
previous two years.
Amina
once again returns as the top player in intercollegiate women’s
squash, having captured the Constable and CSA title the last two seasons.
She posted a 14-2 mark last year playing No. 1 for the Bantams, and was
also a repeat selection on the NESCAC All-American Squad. Pam improved
her play last season, solidifying herself as the team’s No.3
player for the Howe Cup. Finishing with a 9-2 record, Pam also graced
the NESCAC All-American Team.
Playing behind Amina for the third straight season will be junior and
two-time All-American Lynn Leong, who is 30-4 in her first two seasons.
She finished last season as the nation’s No.3 ranked player. Leong
and fellow junior Meridy Vollmer have proven to be one of the top classes
in the program’s history. Vollmer was 15-3, routinely blasting her
opponents at the No. 9 spot.
Seniors Barbara Escobar
and Elizabeth Frank will continue to push for playing time, while providing
exemplary leadership and selfless attitudes.
The sophomore class will be equally impressive, led by All-Americans Larissa
Stephenson and Isa Restrepo. Last season the two were virtually unbeatable
in the middle of the lineup. Margot Kearney, Katie Peck and Leigh Endresen
also excelled registering 24 wins among them.
In addition, the team will have three outstanding players entering as
freshmen. Vaidehi Reddy, from India, is one of the country’s top
junior players and will be representing India at the World Junior Women’s
Championships in Cairo, Egypt. Veda Dhaul is also from India and will
be an experienced contributor to the team. Siobhan Knight, from Zimbabwe,
will be another main contributor. She is a high level junior player, who
has been ranked as high as No.3 in her country.
The team members are excited about the upcoming season, but know the challenge
of winning a third straight championship will not be easy. We will miss
Clare Austin (’03) who was a tremendous leader and always won the
big match. However, we have a veteran team combined with three outstanding
freshmen. Our team philosophy is a major reason for our success, and we
will continue that approach as we strive to win another national title.
