2003-04 Squash Program
Outlook This year marks the second year Virginia has officially competed against other varsity CSA teams. Last year our goal was to expand the program by playing matches against other varsity teams and ultimately compete in Nationals. Virginia made it's debut appearance at Nationals and succesfully defeated the competition to take home the Chaffee Cup. Virginia also won the Southern Squash Conference Championship Tournament and remains undefeated in that since its inception in 2001. Now that Virginia has established itself as a CSA team, we are hoping to expand our program to become more competitive. After having lost key seniors Tyler Hinckley (#3) and Townsend Buckles (#4), the team has 7 returning players in addition to a strong group of freshman. This year will act as another building year for Virginia. Currently, there are only 2 returning players who are seniors: Jay Subhash (Captain) and John Warin. Other retuning players include: Dan Bracey, Elliott Pool, Santiago Falconi, Ben Warfield, and John Swain. Virginia's team consists primarily of younger players, which will provide the school with a solid team over the next few years. Furthermore, Virginia's strength continues to be depth. Although the top of the ladder has a lot of talented players, the bottom half should not be overlooked. Historically, most victories have been due to the strength of players in positions 5-9. For the 2003-04 season, Virginia has some matches lined up against several varsity teams, including some schools that Virginia has not played in the past. Virginia opens it season at Navy on the weekend of November 1, with matches against Navy, Franklin & Marshall, Haverford and GWU. In addition, Virignia plans to play Columbia and other neighboring schools at some point this season. Virginia has some aspiring goals for the season. First,
Virginia hopes to advance into the Conroy division at Nationals and ultimately
win that division. Next, Virginia will travel to Chapel Hill for the fourth
year in a row with hopes to take home the Southern Squash Conferece Championship
for the fourth time in a row in March. And finally, the team is looking
to expand the program by gaining more members, becoming more competitive,
and establishing the University of Virginia as one of the first strong
squash schools in the south.
