Jansher
announces his return to pro squash
Former world squash champion Jansher Khan has announced his return to the international circuit amid hopes that he will guide Pakistan to recover its lost glory in the game, according to a report from Pakistan News International. Addressing a hurriedly called press conference at the Lahore Press Club, he said he will start by playing in national tournaments before going on to the international circuit. "I have requested the Pakistan Squash Federation (PSF) to award me PSA membership and wild card entry in the Pakistan Naval Chief of Staff Squash Tournament scheduled to be held in Karachi starting September 18," Jansher said, adding that he has personally spoken to the PSF President Mushaf Ali Mir who welcomed his decision. Jansher, who ruled the world of squash for ten years and played his last international tournament in Maastricht 1999, where he lost to Jonathon Power of Canada in the first round, expressed his disappointment over the dearth of quality squash players in Pakistan who can challenge the supremacy of players like Peter Nicol and David Palmer in world squash. "I have decided to stage a come back after watching the performance of Pakistan players on the international circuit and I feel that I can still compete at international level," he claimed. Jansher said he never left training and exercise after quitting the game about five years ago because of severe knee problems. "I am quite fit and feel that I can sustain the hardships of this demanding game," he said, adding that his return to international squash would not interfere with his squash academy which he announced two months ago. He claimed there was no stiff competition in the world of squash and it would be easy for him to gain a top position in the world rankings. Jansher said he had recovered 99 per cent from his knee injury and was fit enough to play on international circuit even at the age of 34. He was of the view that God had gifted Pakistan with a lot of talent, and the young players only needed proper training and coaching. If Chris Walker at 34 can make a comeback into the top ten, why not Jansher? Granted Chris only took a year off and Jansher hasn't played professionally since 1999. A fit and determined Jansher would be an interesting contender.
