[review the complete team draws and results ]

Australia's team engineered a major upset in the semi finals today when they deservingly won their match against second seeds England 3-0.

Although the match ended in a 3-0 win for the Aussies, it was extremely close and could have very well gone the other way. Australia’s Urquhart and England’s Beddoes, each country’s number two player, started off the match.

Each match would be crucial for the final result, and the opening match was no exception, as it would give a boost in confidence for the winners and increase the pressure on the losers. Urquhart started the match with a streak of unforced errors to give Beddoes an early lead. Beddoes took advantage and had game point when she led 8-4. Urquhart didn’t let go and worked her self back into the game, disguising her shots and changing the pace. Urquhart’s determination paid off and she won the game 10-8. Urquhart seemed to have a slight edge over Beddoes who looked more nervous than her Aussie opponent. The Aussie closed down the match in four to give Australia a 1-0 lead.
Australia only needed one more win to win the whole thing. Their number one players, Australia’s Brown and England’s Pierrepont came on next. Pierrepont was definitely feeling the pressure as she knew that she had to win her match to keep England’s hopes alive. The match was surely to be a great one; and a great match it was.

Both players’ squash level was about the same. Both looked very fit. After 78 minutes of terrific squash, the Aussie prevailed in five games, 9-7 in the fifth, to give Australia the win and its ticket to the finals of the world juniors. The players had played everything in the book in what proved to be the most exciting match of the tournament yet. In the third rubber, England’s Siddall hardly made an effort and retired after the first game, saving her energy for tomorrow’s third and fourth place playoff.

Egypt had no trouble advancing to the finals when it beat India in the second semi-final match. India rested its number one player, Chinappa, saving her energy for the third and fourth playoff against England. None of the Egyptians lost any games and Egypt had another easy win. Egypt will be playing Australia for the team title.

Canada and Malaysia won their matches in the 5-8 consolation plate against the US and Hong Kong respectively. The Canada/USA match was the closer of the two. Canada’s Clackson played aggressively to beat Rein Weston in three. Lorentzen looked like she was going to tie the match when she led 2-0 in games and looked in complete control. But her drives got shorter and looser, and Ranieri took advantage and volleyed to increase the pressure on the American to win the next three games and give the win and match to Canada. Duboc won her match 2-0 against Canada’s Polonich in the dead rubber for a final score of 2-1 for Canada.
